Pōhutukawa and rātā are native New Zealand trees, known for their striking red flowers that bloom from November to January. These trees hold a significant place in Māori mythology.
According to legend, the young Māori warrior, Tāwhaki, attempted to seek help in the heavens to avenge his father's death. He fell to earth, and the crimson flowers of the pōhutukawa and rātā are said to represent his blood.
