The Ponga Silver Fern is commonly found in the North Island of New Zealand and can also be spotted in the far north and east coast of the South Island. It is easily recognisable by the silver-white colour of the underside of its mature leaves.

The Silver Fern holds a special place in New Zealand culture and pride. According to Māori legend, Hunters would use the silver underside of the fern leaves to find their way home; when bent at an angle, the leaves would catch the moonlight, illuminating a path through the forest.
